This IS your period. Blood turns brown as it ages due to a byproduct called bilirubin (boring, but the point is brown means blood). It doesn't have to hurt. My first period I thought it was poop because it was brown haha and I didn't get cramps for years. The first one is usually pretty light and easy. Just say "Hey mom, I think I have my you-know-what." She'll understand and it's not that embarrassing.
